ANSS Intermountain West (IMW) Region Regional Advisory Committee

Purpose

Under the management structure of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS), guidance at the regional level is provided by a Regional Advisory Committee composed of end users of seismic information (e.g., practicing engineers, emergency managers, seismologists, geologists, utility operators, transportation officials, and so on).

The ANSS Intermountain West (IMW) Region encompasses the eight state region of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. Within this region, the Regional Advisory Committee works with the regional coordinator to (1) review planning documents and provide guidance on the local/regional implementation of the ANSS, (2) critique and review proposed instrument site locations, (3) serve as strong advocates of the ANSS, and (4) foster participation of interested parties, including those from the private sector.

The ANSS-IMW Regional Advisory Committee is currently structured to include up to two representatives from each of the eight IMW states plus four at-large members representing region-wide interests.

The original ANSS management plan recognized that the urban monitoring component of the ANSS would likely require local or state-level advisory groups, linked to the Regional Advisory Committee, to guide implementation. State-level advisory groups consisting mostly of engineers guide ANSS urban strong-motion monitoring in Utah and Nevada.

For more information on the overall management structure of the Advanced National Seismic System, see U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 0045-01.
