University of Utah Strong-Motion Station Siting Criteria
FY2000-2001 ANSS-funded Network
When choosing locations to install the 45 ANSS stations, we considered the following when selecting sites:
Geographic density in the Wasatch Front Urban corridor bounded by Brigham City, southern Utah County (Lake Shores/Mapleton), Tooele, and Park City.
Sampling of soil types (Vs 30 classifications).
Locations relative to existing strong motion stations in operation.
Where possible, at least one free field rock site on both sides of each valley.
Telemetry constraints (current telemetry options are public Internet, leased frame relay telephone lines, or spread-spectrum digital radio).
Constraint of finding buildings less than 4000 sq. ft. or a free-field site.
Protection from vandalism.
Our siting plans were reviewed by several local engineers and by the USGS Ground-Motion Team.
